The tips below should help to ensure that your trip runs smoothly and avoids any unnecessary hiccups.

Arriving in Manila can be a daunting experience and precautions do need to be taken. We strongly advise you not to take taxis that are loitering around, instead we recommend that you always request a hotel pick up. After all when you arrive in any country you are very vulnerable especially when it is your first visit. Therefore splash out and treat yourself to the luxury of a hotel limousine, they are not ridiculously expensive and you can arrive with peace of mind.

Things are changing in Manila especially at the airport, but always keep an eye on your bags. This includes when they are passing through the x ray machine. Try to keep your eyes on them at all times.

In Manila the best way to get around is by taxi. Generally all the taxis are safe however if you do have reservations then simply go to one of the major hotels which you never will be too far from and ask them to call you one or even use their hotel car. All the taxis have meters which start at 25 pesos. Some taxi driver will claim the meter does not work etc. If this is the case simply get out and get another taxi.

If you require a taxi for a couple of days, longer or even for just a day, we can recommend one driver. He speaks good english, has a sense of humour and knows his way around. You can call him on his mobile to organise a price, his name is Mr. Joe Villaro, mobile number - 0917 - 416 1156.

The jeepnees look fun and colourful but we do not recommend you take one unless you are somewhere like Cebu Island. In Manila we would only travel by official taxi.

The new train system has opened, but is not overly useful as it is not yet fully spread around the city.

Having said all this the Philippines is a great place to visit and the Philippines people are lovely. Taking a few of the little precautions will help, with your trip and will hopefully minimise any potential problems.

City Sights girls on cebu

Cebu takes pride in being the country's oldest colonial city. The original cross is now encased in a hallow hardwood cross and can be found in a roofed kiosk along Magallanes Street.

As a baptismal gift to Queen Juana, Magellan gave a black image of the Infant Child which, on April 27, 1565, managed to remain unscathed after a fire razed Cebu to the ground. The Basilica Minor del Santo Niño was built by Captain Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and Fr. Andres Urdaneta on the spot where the miraculous icon was found. The religious statue has since been enthroned in the basilica, with the original kept inside the convent and a replica enshrined at the church's side altar.

From mainland Cebu, Magellan crossed the channel to the island of Mactan in an effort to spread Christianity. The chieftain Lapu-lapu, together with his warriors, resisted the attempt and killed Magellan as he reached the shore. A monument now marks the site.

Fort San Pedro, located at Cebu City's wharf area, was the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the country. The fort has been turned into a museum-park.

Colon, the country's oldest street, was built at the Parian or Chinese District. Located at the heart of downtown, it is a busy commercial center by day and a lively entertainment belt by night.

The seat of the provincial government is an imposing building of pre-Pacific War vintage rising majestically along Osmeña Boulevard.

Located at the center of the boulevard is Fuente Osmeña, named after Cebu's Grand Old Man, the late Commonwealth President Sergio Osmeña, Sr. A favorite strolling park among locals, the circular Fuente becomes even more alive in the evenings. Within the park is a skating rink.

The University of San Carlos was established by the Dominican fathers on the site of the former Jesuit-run Colegio de San Ildefonso, originally founded in 1595. Its museum on P. del Rosario Street has an extensive collection of anthropological and biological artifacts.

The Southwestern University Museum located on the Urgello Private Road, takes pride in its large collection of pre-colonial and colonial artifacts as well as its Filipiniana Research Center.

Casa Gorordo, along Lopez Jaena Street, is the ancestral house of the first Bishop of Cebu and affords one a glimpse of affluent Cebuano lifestyle, circa 1800.

The Jumalon Museum, Butterfly Sanctuary and Art Gallery in the Basak district was the private museum of the late lepidopterist Professor Julian Jumalon. His garden continues to be a haven to thousands of butterflies and his salon features mosaics made of butterfly wings.

The Cebuano's Chinese heritage is very visible and one of the more popular destinations in the city is the Taoist Temple, located at the highest elevation of the Beverly Hills Subdivision.

Devotees, meanwhile, go to the Heavenly Temple of Charity at the Peace Valley in the Lahug district.

Yet another pilgrimage spot is the Celestial Garden where life-size replicas of the 14 Stations of the Cross are spread in a 12-hectare property within Banawa Hills.

Beautiful girl on Cebu

Cebuanos celebrate life like no other. But even before Cebu became the Occidental gateway to the Orient, it was already a popular entry point among Asian merchants.

Cebu has since blossomed into a choice tourist destination, with many leisure establishments taking full advantage of its sea-valley-and-mountain location.

Metropolitan Cebu, the country's second biggest metropolis, is the political, economic, educational and cultural center of the Visayas. It is its own microbrewery. The bar is small yet comfortable, and prices are 77 Pesos for a beer. Happy hour is a jug of beer for 165 Pesos from 11 am to 7 pm.

Conways : Located on the second floor of the Makati Shangri-La, the bar was once one of the top venues for the high rolling Manila crowd. Unfortunately it has become a little aged and will soon be undergoing a much needed renovation. The bar is open from 5pm to 2 am on Saturday and 11.30 am to 2 am the rest of the week. Happy hour runs from 3 pm to 9 pm and is a 1 price deal. This means that you pay a flat price of 250 Pesos for either a beer or cocktail choice, and then you simply continue to drink as much as you can for that one flat price until happy hour is over, or possibly until you yourself are finished which ever may come sooner ! The only stipulation here is that if you choose the beer option you must stick to it, however you are entitled to swap between the beers they offer. The promotion includes all locally made beers, so the famous San Miguel, and also Carlsberg and Budweiser which are now brewed locally. The Cocktail promotion again allows you to switch between cocktails and these include, Pina Colada, Long Island Ice Tea, Marguerita, Mai Tai and one other). A live band (or two) plays at the bar from 9pm to 1 am, with a solo singer operating from 6pm to 9pm. The bar is busiest after 10.30/11 pm but still attracts quite a gathering of after work drinkers.

Danish Connection : Located on Kalayan Avenue, this to be honest is more of a restaurant than a bar. It is open from 9 am to 1 am but quietens down after dinner around 10pm. The bar is a Viking style bar, which even has a small Viking boat suspended from the ceiling which is used the bars glass holder. The food is good, and the bar itself gets busy with expat residents that are living in the area just after work around 7pm. If you are in the area it is worth going to if only to see Julie, one of the beautiful waitresses !

Bars in Manila

Manila has been renowned for many years as a great venue for nightlife of all different varieties. Below we guide you through some of the major bars and nightlife areas to help you get around and give you an idea of what is going on and when. We aim to ensure that our reviews of the bars in Manila inform you on when they are busy, the average prices you can expect to pay, the ambience and type of clientele that they have etc.

We focus more on the "better" bars, which are suitable for anyone whether travelling alone or with a family or partner, with only a sprinkling of information on the infamous "girlie" bars that can be found in Manila.

As the Philippines is generally quite Americanised please do take note that it is extremely difficult to find some sporting events, especially English Premier League Football (soccer to some) being shown live in the bars around Manila. One bar Heckle & Jeckle does tend to show either slightly delayed or live football, yet it is the only one we could find in the whole of Manila. Heckle & Jeckle (telephone - 890 6904) can be found on Jupiter Street just off the end of P. Burgos. Do call in advance to see what they are playing. Alternatively nearly all hotels in Manila have very good television channels that generally include Star Sports and ESPN.
